Just last year, I noticed a tree I had somehow never seen before in my 33 years in my hometown—Golden Penda tree. When in bloom, it produces vibrant, almost fluorescent yellow flowers that completely transform the landscape.
I was inspired to paint these trees, and around the same time, a friend posted a photo he had taken of two lorikeets sitting in a Penda tree. I used his photography as a reference for the piece. I was also already wanting to paint lorikeets, as they are one of my favourite birds.
The original painting was sold to Daryl, a beekeeper in Bellingen.
